With a learner's license you can go out on learning lessons either with someone who has held the license for two years or going on lessons with a professional instructor. Get as much practice as you can, the number of lessons will depend from learner to learner, but around 20 is a good ballpark figure.

IMPORTANT: you must be insured in the vehicle you use for your learning lessons, and the insurance companies will only insure you if you have a valid (and non-expired) learner's license. If you have an accident during a learming lesson and you are not insured you will be in a heap of trouble, so don't do it.

Driving under a learner's license has some restrictions, the key ones:

• You must display L plates at the front and back of your vehicle
• You must be accompanied by someone who has held a license for at least two years
• If you are driving a car you need to have the instructor with you but no other passenger
• If you are driving a bike you can drive on your own or, if you carry a pillon driver, they must have had a license for at least two years
• There are restrictions on which areas you can drive through with a learner license, some common sense: do not drive in housing estates, schools, beaches during the summer, the inner city, etc. Those areas where if you have an accident you may endanger others.
